The elections in India

The Indian elections have enormous numerical data: the total voters of the 29 states that make up the country are 900 million (of which 84 million will go to the vote for the first time), which means the largest democracy in the world, of which 300 million are illiterate, the others paralno twenty-two different languages plus a variety of dialects that should be several thousand, eleven million volunteers, who must ensure the conduct of electoral operations along with a deployment of public force, the vastness of the territory, which it covers very different natural environments and climates, the presence of a law that must guarantee to everyone that the minimum distance from the polling station is within two kilometers and, finally, the total cost estimated at around six billion euros. The phases in which the elections are organized are also a complex process, consisting of seven steps, which will end with the final scrutiny of 23 May. The Indian country comes from five years governed by the nationalist party, which have been characterized by a series of missed objectives, compared to the electoral promises. Certainly the negative economic situation, which led, for example, to the fall in the prices of raw materials and the consequent agricultural crisis, has influenced the results of the government program, which is also attributed to the loss of as many as eleven million total jobs in the country. The conservatives, the outgoing majority, are also disputed the excessive interference in public institutions, such as the Supreme Court and the federal bank, a sign of a lowering of the democratic level. On the level of rights, the fact of the strong increase in attacks on Muslim people represents a setback, as well as a lack of attention to minorities; the action of the outgoing government was characterized by a lower tolerance, a factor openly contrary to the tradition of the country. The government can, however, boast economic growth of around 7.5%, the program in favor of poor families in terms of health and legislative reforms on taxation. The most recent surveys give the outgoing majority in difficulty, however the reliability of these surveys does not guarantee sufficient reliability margins due to the great fragmentation of the social fabric of the country, even if in the regional elections carried out in 2018 the opposition party won in three states considered crucial. The Conservative party has terminated the humanitarian with an unmistakable nationalist signal, launching a spatial plan with contained costs, but with significant meanings. To help the rise in the polls there was a confrontation with Pakistan, which brought the interest of voters to the international management plan perhaps easier than the domestic one, and, anyway, able to take the attention of that part of electorate disappointed by the economic results, but sensitive to nationalism and to the international importance of the Indian country.
