Latvia in the euro from 2014
From 1 January 2014, the area of the single European currency, the euro, will have its eighteenth member: Latvia. The Baltic country has made significant efforts to overcome the economic crisis that hit the country in 2008-2009, with a deep recession, coming in 2012 to a growth figures more than flattering, stood at 5.6%. The result was also obtained by interpreting an economic policy that aimed to meet the strict criteria for joining the single currency. The country's economy is healthy and has the requirements of the budgetary convergence, also the growth has not stopped, despite the global crisis, and the estimated value for 2013 is 3.8%, while for 2014 is expected to reach 4.1%. Olli Rehn, European Commissioner for Economic Affairs has certified the performance of Latvian praising the goodness of the economic reforms put in place, together with a strict fiscal discipline. The new member joining the euro shows that constitutes evidence of the ability of the single currency to attract new members, despite the state of crisis that crosses the continent, thanks to monetary stability which can ensure, from the point of view of policy , Latvia is the example that the European model retains its own vitality within which you can find their place. In addition, the country of Latvia, in turn, can be an incentive for those countries that are already within the single currency, but they are going through economic difficulties: the proper proportions while making the economic model of Latvia may indicate reforms to follow to reach a good level of growth after a major crisis. The project of Latvia, with the entry into the single currency is to stabilize the labor market, financial stabilization, the arrival of new investments and the end of currency speculation. This is certainly a long-term project that does not seem to have been understood by the majority of the population, according to a survey carried out in the month of May has ruled for 62% against accession to the European single currency. On the opposition have certainly been ironclad constraints imposed by the European Central Bank and the poor performance of the major economies of the euro. To combat this mistrust the finance minister of Latvia, Andris Vilks, announced that the government will do a job of communication so that people realize that the process of joining the euro is still an inescapable fact, able to bring benefits, such as have demonstrated the adhesion, which took place in 2011, neighboring countries of Finland and Estonia.
