The decision of new Israeli settlements endangers the resumption of talks
The decision to approve the construction of a further 800 new homes in the settlements on Palestinian territory in fact, evidence that the intentions of Tel Aviv, about the imminent resumption of the peace process are not serious. The problem is mostly internal to the executive Israeli, where the controversial decision seems to have been taken to satisfy the rightmost part which supports the government. This situation highlights the contradictions in the government of Israel, where the willingness to resume a peace process, leading to a final conclusion on the age-old question, is clearly not shared by all the components that make up the structure of government. If these conditions were already known, it was hoped that the importance of the stakes final settlement could allow to reach a compromise, which could lead to a balance between the various components of the government. What was expected from USA and Palestinians, first of all, and the whole international scene, was that Israel would address the issue with a minimum of unity, which could avoid excesses that can endanger the negotiations, even before the start of . This hope is shared by a large part of the same Israeli public opinion, which fits the definition of the peace process a chance to earn a territorial pacification required for a greater development of the Israeli state, based on international stability and balance. In the event the position of Benjamin Netanyahu, not at all clear: if, on the one hand, his positions are well known about settlements, often with the backing of substantial shape to new settlements, this time the promises made in Washington seemed to address the Israeli leader on a more cautious approach, however, the granting of new housing, given its notwithstanding the promises made to the U.S., puts him in apparent subordinate position, almost blackmailed by the most extreme part of the executive, which had upheld in negatively the decision to release more than one hundred Palestinian prisoners. If this interpretation were true, Netanyahu seems hostage to a political party certainly not conducive to the resumption of negotiations, which is substantial, capable of jeopardizing the proper outcome of the negotiation. A first effect of the decision of the construction of new housing has been to stiffen the position of the Palestinian Authority's chief negotiator, Saeb Erekat, who immediately made it clear that the resumption of talks is already compromised again before we leave. According to the Israeli press, and the U.S., the Palestinians would have already been aware of the decision, which would be taken just to balance the release of prisoners and balance, so the decision to silence the Israeli right. This version, however, seems too incomplete for the apparent disproportion in favor of Israel and especially if made to gain time on increasing the settlements, if framed in a plan that aims to arouse the indignation of the leaders of Palestine, they could not accept to sit a table of negotiations, already compromised by a clear violation. A delay in the resumption of negotiations would allow Israel to buy time to establish new colonies, however, a tactic widely used by Tel Aviv for some time. Now, verify what the American reaction, with Washington in turn, dependent on the mood variables of Israel, which, again, comes out with a very bad impression.
