If Hungary wants to restore the death penalty, it must be taken out of the European Union

Can the EU still waive its principles and tolerating inside states that have governments which are in fact divorced, and strangers to the common rules and is likely to remain in Brussels only for economic benefits and contributions? The reason should say no, especially at a time of acute institutional crisis, which calls into question the very existence of the institution, especially for its intrinsic political weakness and lack of international weight. The case of Hungary is in this respect emblematic. The right-wing coalition that leads the country and that has repeatedly breached EU laws imposing restrictive laws to the press, electoral systems and illiberal behavior consistently opposed to the, albeit vague, the European Union, has now embarked on a debate in favor of the death penalty. This measure was invoked for the sole benefit of the demands of the far right in the country, that is strictly related to the very life of the executive. It is not hard to believe that, in case of necessity of survival of the government, the Hungarian prime minister could stoop to violate a fundamental principle of the European Union. If the condemnation of Brussels is obvious, in this case the words are not enough, but it is necessary that the proclamations are followed by concrete facts. Already last year, the European Union executive has launched a project that aims to measure the application of democratic norms in individual member states, with the possibility of penalizing any authoritarian tendencies with, for example, the withdrawal of voting rights. This measure, for now never applied, does not seem sufficient to preserve the rules of democracy and the very European stability against violations present and especially future, that may occur. It is no secret that in the old continent are forecast to increase populist movements and far-right, which could groped to overturn the basic rules underpinning the European plant. There is a clear need to establish a system of sanctions drive in front of violations of this kind, which leads, as a maximum penalty, even exclusion from the European Union for what was proving to no longer accept the basic rules, if necessary, They must be legally strengthened, also reviewing the conditions for access and, if necessary, impose new signatures, through the renewal of the agreements, for the European Union membership. That would also be an alternative to the need to strengthen political, which remains the only possible way for the union to become a world-class international political subject. However, despite the debate started on the Hungarian question in the European Parliament, the very top legislature Community has demonstrated its political weakness inherent within its organs. This has been reflected in the failure to sanction the party of Prime Minister of Budapest, by the own group: that of popular. There was, in fact, no official position, especially of condemnation by the political group, which in theory, is inspired by Christian values ​​translated into policy. In addition, the Hungarian prime minister has also shown little sensitivity towards the issue of migrants, being the only government official to not participate in the special meeting on the subject, which was held in Brussels. If Europe wants to think only in economic terms, which are then evaluated the costs of maintenance within the perimeter of the states that do not share the fundamental principles and remain only for opportunistic reasons.
