The European Union is not subject to the blackmail of the United Kingdom
If
in the election campaign, David Cameron, had promised a referendum
scheduled for 2017, to be submitted to the citizens of the United
Kingdom, their willingness to remain within the European Union, the
election result seems to accelerate this goal, anticipating a year . The program Cameron is not, however, to get out by the European Union, as to stay there on his own terms. The
British prime minister's objective, then, about a year of time to deal
with the issues in Brussels where the British country seemed to be more
sensitive, thanks to the consensus that has given the Conservative
Party. The
goal is to have greater autonomy from national parliaments, with
respect to the binding decisions of the European Parliament, a more
flexible decision-making on financial matters, to the European states,
which are not entered in the single currency and a more restrictive
policy against immigrants, especially for access to welfare. It
is a mixture of populism mixed with the needs of big business and
national chauvinism, all, possibly, always under the protection of
Brussels, which provides great benefits of the opportunities of the
common market. A
further reason to anticipate the referendum question are the dates of
the elections to be held in major European countries in 2017:
anticipating the referendum, Cameron intends to renegotiate the European
treaties with the current executive, preventing new forces to the
government, such as, for example, the extreme right in France or socialists in Germany. At
the same time, anticipate the referendum also means reducing the
uncertainty that will be created in the financial markets by the British
when they formally decide to give the floor to the people to decide
whether to stay in Europe. Cameron
tries to avoid greater risks and make a calculated gamble, however the
availability of Brussels does not seem to match the electorate English; for
the European Union to re-discussion of the Treaties does not seem to be
the order of the day not to retreat on their strong points and
encourage other behaviors similar to those in London, especially in
times when you need to overcome the crisis and who need to balance and stability. If
Brussels does not want to give up these conditions should avoid
slipping into a deal that promises to be grueling and can divert
precious energy by complicated processes, which are necessary to
overcome the crisis. Although
the UK is an important component of Europe, it can not subject the
European institution to stress by attrition with the sole purpose of
obtaining exclusive benefits for their own advantage. A
viable solution would be to not respond to the British referendum with a
similar one in the other EU countries, where the question should be
whether you still want to London within Europe, after explaining all the
advantages it has enjoyed the UK
and which wants to increase the amount, without paying the due and,
indeed, through a finance without the rules of other states, benefit
from a liquidity obtained with tax benefits unmatched in most of the
rest of the European Union. The
question is whether the European Union needs the UK or if the reverse
is true, despite what Cameron wants to believe in Brussels. Sure,
some politician who rides the wave of populism, can tag along to the
reasons against immigration, but this argument, yet sensitive, does not
justify the presence of a state within a supranational institution,
without adhering to all the rules shared and, moreover, it has already been signed. It
would seem to Brussels came forward to no longer suffer these blackmail
and, indeed, to make it a starting point for finally taking on a higher
political level. If
the United Kingdom comes from Europe can only lose if Europe is not the
United Kingdom can absorb the blow and come out stronger politically,
because deprived of a carrier member of destabilization. The
European Union must defend its own rules and to release those who do
not agree on their own and with sanction mechanisms which prevent one
member renegotiate treaties already signed and that Cameron will enjoy
his electoral triumph in his splendid isolation.
