The goal of the total defeat of hunger has not yet been reached
In
the recent report by the United Nations Food and Agriculture
Organisation and the World Food Programme, it is evident that the number
of people suffering from hunger has fallen by 216 million, compared to
the data of the two-year period in 1990 -92
and with as many as 72 were developing, the initial 129, which managed
to reach the target set for 2015 of halving world hunger. Still,
if you compare the data with those of the current 1990-92 the
percentage of undernourished people fell from 18.6 percent to 10.9
percent. Although
this is encouraging data, even considering that accrues in a difficult
economic environment, caused by the economic crisis and the increase in
population, the number of hungry people worldwide, is still too large:
they are at least 795 million, the undernourished people. This figure is going to intersect geopolitical problems, these also unleash wars and violence among peoples and nations. Often the weapon of hunger is used by political groups or terrorist to alter the balance of entire regions of the planet. Not
at all programs of humanitarian organizations are often hampered
because they keep the monopoly of the food supply also means having the
political, or at least the practical capacity to affect parts of the
territory of a nation. A
direct consequence of hunger and famine is the migratory movement,
which has taken on enormous proportions, it is that become a problem for
many countries, not just Western. On
the other hand, access to food is a strong factor in the conditioning
of political life, which goes beyond individual national borders and now
influence the policies of the richest states. But
just look at the need for food in isolation from the political context
is a grave error in the analysis phase, since the fight against hunger
must be caught in a wider program of access to rights, who can go beyond
the satisfaction of the primary ones. A
program of food self can not be considered separately from an awareness
and the exercise of civil rights, first of all as citizens and workers.
These
intentions collide with education levels still low and the invasiveness
of religion, often Islam, in its most extreme forms, within the poorest
societies, going to be an obstacle to the success more complete
development. It
must be specified that technological advances allow the processing of
non-productive soils before and in this sense there are objective
facilities to work in the sense of food self; this
factor can allow a greater rationalization of the international aid and
therefore also a greater involvement of developed countries. An
action in this respect from those countries should not cut off by
internal problems and then spread to those plagued by civil wars and
terrorism. This
gradualism may meet in a kind of respite care for those refugees who
are fleeing hunger, without being forced to cross entire continents to
ensure a better future. It
is, of course, a considerable effort in terms of organization, in which
the United Nations should have the guidance and coordination, but above
all use persuasion in the rich countries, to get the right funding,
which then would be merely for investment create new markets at a later date.
