Egypt offers itself as a mediator between Israel and Palestine
The
proposal of the Government of Egypt to become a mediator in the
conflict between the Palestinians and Arabs was unexpected, but it is
part of a logic that responds to a pure political calculation, that
would allow Egypt to quit international media from the attention for the
harsh repression put in place by the government of Cairo and acquire the lost prestige. For
the US each ally found on the road to peace between Israelis and
Palestinians is always welcome, even if, in the Egyptian case, it is, no
doubt, of an uncomfortable ally, with which the contacts are not
interrupted, but loose, precisely because of the lack of respect for human rights shown by Al Sisi. However
it is also true that Washington, even if a thousand uncertainties, for
the moment still prefer the system in force to the only possible
alternative to a return of the Muslim Brotherhood, too conditioned
radical Islamic element. The
White House condemned the violent repression of Al Sisi, but it has not
stopped at all the reports and has not condemned in a sufficiently
serious manner the continued violation of the rights to the detriment of
the Egyptian population, because he sees, however, the Egyptian regime
of a check on possible advanced Islamist and therefore also of the Islamic State, to the banks of the southern Mediterranean. Mediation
of Al Sisi is also pleasing to Israel and to the government,
opposition, for the position that Cairo has maintained in the Sinai,
hampering extremists against the Israeli town, also between the two
countries, after the fall of the Brothers Muslim
relations between the respective executable are more than good, as they
were between Israel and Mubarak, because in Tel Aviv have identified
the government in office far from hostile, secular impression and not
prone to an Islamization of the country. Between the two governments are being reciprocal collaborations, although not official, to ensure the respective safety. Also
for the Palestinians Egypt is a reliable partner, perhaps more to the
Palestine Liberation Organization, which governs the West Bank, which
for Hamas, which actually administers the Gaza Strip and had to suffer
consequences from occupation practices military Sinai by the Egyptian government in office. The
background to the Egyptian proposal were the difficulties to convene an
international peace conference for the Middle East, to which were
invited Arab and Western countries; this conference is an unwelcome French initiative to Israel, so was likely to become yet another diplomatic failure. Egypt,
by contrast, said he was also in favor of this initiative,
demonstrating a willingness to play all-out to promote peace, which
should have as a final result in the creation of the Palestinian state; it
is clear that such a result, never reached until now is, perhaps, a
target too big, but even the attempt is an opportunity for Egypt to
distract the international public opinion, too focused on the work of
the repressive government of Cairo. These assessments lead necessarily to a question that can not be placed: the Al Sisi intentions are sincere? A
negative response would only assume yet another waste of time in
question between Israelis and Palestinians and therefore a futile
attempt, however, although it is unclear what the Egyptian intentions is
undeniable that the favorable attitude of Israel, we are faced an opportunity not to be wasted. If
Egypt would reach the goal that has never arrived, they should be
recognized for their merits, but this should not prevent us from
continuing to detect the internal situation; Al
Sisi certainly would enjoy an increased international prestige, but
this should be restricted or prevented by a more active US role and the
Western countries, who will have the opportunity to exploit the presence
of a mediator acceptable to both parties to expedite the process of peace. It
is still necessary to consider a further advantageous aspect for Egypt,
to promote the peace process, in addition to divert international
attention to what happens in its territory: the achievement of peace
between Israelis and Palestinians and the creation of a viable
Palestinian state, it
could determine the end of the unstable situation in the Egyptian
Sinai, where it should end the fundamentalist presence in favor of
Hamas, regularly framed in a sovereign state, as well as should end the
embargo on the Gaza strip; This would give greater solidity to also Egypt's internal situation. Exploiting
this aspect by Western governments is fundamental, then power also
affect the issue of respect for rights and to try to restore the
democracy in the country, which seemed reached with Mubarak political
order.
