The EU suspends negotiations with Turkey for membership in Brussels
The
European Parliament's decision, taken by a large majority, to block
officially the negotiations of accession of Turkey to the European
Union, does not change substantially, the state of things, because the
process was already in the process of stagnation, but it is important from
the point of symbolic and political views, because it marks the
official condemnation of the turkish regime to have greatly reduced
civil rights under the guise of the attempted coup, the dynamics of
which has not yet been clarified. Finally
Brussels took a decision to dense deep political significance, which
requires a sentence to Ankara, which seems to be final, unless
substantial changes will intervene in the internal politics of the
turkish government and the attitude of President Erdogan. The
decision makes official a distancing between the EU and Turkey, which
began long before Erdogan started a restriction of civil rights, and
that began with the breakthrough confessional imposed by President
turkish and that had caused a secular deterioration of the image of the
country. Despite
its rapprochement between the two sides, as determined by the emergency
refugees, from which Turkey hoped to have some advantages, especially
for the movement of its citizens in EU countries and for the hope of an
acceleration of the accession process Brussels,
the road taken by Erdogan again dismissed the two parts in a way so far
never occurred since the beginning of the accession process. Although
the turkish president had repeatedly belittled, recently, the
possibility to enter Europe, the decision has aroused deep
disappointment, both in the turkish government and opposition, albeit
for different reasons. The
European refusal is for Turkey and for the ambitions of Erdogan a
defeat, which negatively affects the prestige, already tarnished, the
turkish government in the international arena. For
Ankara, isolated on different issues, keep open, even with remote
possibility, the possibility of an entry into Europe was also a way to
maintain an official dialogue with Brussels; conversely
the freezing process is a diplomatic closure which is also an official
rejection, and a conviction, the turn autocratic Erdogan. It
is, that is, questioned officially, outside the convictions expressed
by individual members, the manner of governing the turkish government,
in defiance of respect for human and civil rights. For
the opposition to Erdogan, conversely, it is the end of the claw hope
possible entry into Europe represented: the obligatory adaptation to
Western standards of respect for human rights. However,
on this point, the Turkish opposition hope appears when too vain are
not possible, for Europe, engaging in this area, with a government that
borders on dictatorship and that would upset the European political
system, not not at the vote for the blockade of the accession process of Turkey has been a large majority. This vote, ie, can be read as an instrument of pressure against Erdogan to protect itself opposition. On
the other hand Europe with this resolution assumes a great
responsibility towards herself, for possible retaliation that Turkey can
exercise. It
is estimated that the turkish soil, refugees are about three and a half
million people: open the borders for entry into Europe, even if only a
portion of the occupants of the camps, is a threat to European
stability, already suffering from failure collaboration on the allocation of quotas of migrants, by different states. Erdogan
is aware of having this huge retaliatory weapon for blocking the
negotiations and has already openly threatened to use it if Europe does
not change his attitude. It
remains so difficult to predict developments of the story: if Erdogan
will follow up on its threats, the relationship with Brussels will be
permanently closed, and indeed, could become even worse, if Europe
decides to apply sanctions for violations of the rights, conversely not
engage in any retaliation will result in a decrease in the interior of
the turkish president prestige, that will be weakened by the European
decision. Making
predictions is so far from easy, if not for the certainty of the
deterioration of relations between the two parties that will open a new
diplomatic front to European borders.
