The reasons for Johnson's haste to leave Europe
Boris Johnson after the election statement wants to achieve his main political goal, declared in the election campaign. An amendment by the British executive prevents any postponement of the transitional period to leave the European Union, set for 31 December 2020. Essentially, within a year the United Kingdom (if it remains so for a possible devolution of Scotland) will have to be separated from Brussels with an agreement or without an agreement. This understanding, however, is one-sided, given the known difficulties of reaching this term due to the vastness of the subjects on which to reach an agreement and the consequent complexity of drawing up the methods of relating between the Union and the United Kingdom. The main question is whether the leader of the conservatives, through this understanding, wants to maintain his popularity gained in the traditionally adverse and conquered seats thanks to the political program to leave the Union or if it is a real conviction, which does not take into account the difficulties that will now face in first person. The model of international agreement, which Johnson sees as a solution is that of the free trade agreement between the United States and Canada, given that for London it will be impossible to deal with each of the European states individually. The most obvious objection in this regard to the British leader can only be the length of the negotiations between Washington and Ottawa, which came to the signing of the treaty after seven years, precisely because of the vastness of the subjects dealt with. As one can clearly see, on this basis, the desire to end the process between two parties in a year is purely unrealistic and hides, once again, the truth from the electoral body of the country. Boris Johnson seems to be taking time, like those who preceded him, ready to attribute the failure to achieve the objective of the cumbersome European bureaucracy. It is an easily predictable scheme, which will allow him to make the United Kingdom, once again the victim of Europe, face an uninformed and partial electorate: the one that supported him. Moreover, that on 31 December 2020 it is impossible to put the signature on the treaty by Europe, it was the president of the European Commission who affirmed it, stressing that on matters such as aviation, financial agreements and environmental standards, the period of one year it is largely insufficient. However, during the transitional period foreseen, that is December 31st 2020, Great Britain will continue to follow the rules of the Union, without however having the right to vote in the institutions of Brussels: this condition could favor a further resentment of Johnson's supporters, which will thus have an easy game in orienting the moods of English squares, making them even more opposed to Europe, despite the foreseeable consequences that this decision will have on the economy of the country. In this regard, a small hint has already arrived in correspondence with the amendment that excludes the transitional period with Brussels by the end of 2020: the British currency, the pound, immediately lost more than one percent of the value. The scents of finance, as could have been foreseen, are, therefore, far from being favorable to an exit through agreements deemed insufficient or worse to the absence of an agreement. The feeling is that Johnson and his entourage are aware of the difficulties and intend to prepare the conditions to discharge the responsibilities on Europe. If this hypothesis is true, relations between London and Brussels will still worsen, finally highlighting English opportunism. Both sides will lose a lot, but London will have to deal with a very complicated situation, whose only way out could be a relationship of subordination with the United States: at that point more than one Johnson voter will regret but it may be too late.
