The earthquake in Nepal has hit a country already in big trouble

The terrible earthquake that devastated Nepal, hit one of the poorest nations in the world, which was already suffering from a structural economic crisis, together with a situation as serious by the institutional point of view. A rebellion led to the fall of the monarchy in 2007 but parliament failed to draft a new constitution due to heavy internal strife and also with the elections of 2013 the situation did not unlock for the persistence of conflicts inside the 'national assembly. In this situation of political paralysis, which does not allow the institutional transition, the Government of the economy could not be effective. The nation of Nepal has about 27 million inhabitants and is characterized by a predominantly mountainous terrain that does not allow the exploitation of the soil sufficiently, for an economy that consists predominantly from the primary sector. The arable land is only 20% of the country and is often conditioned by situations where the use of the machines is very difficult and the Nepalese farmers have to work practically without the aid of suitable machinery. A major problem is the need, not satisfied, the creation of infrastructure, which could allow adequate growth. International agencies estimate that the current level of foreign investment is expected to increase fourfold, to ensure proper development to eliminate or reduce the substantial share of poverty from the country. The data of gross domestic product for 2013, speak of a per capita share of 964 Euros, with a quarter of the population living below the poverty line. The most important sector is agriculture, with all the limitations highlighted by the structure of the country and the ninth homogeneous distribution of the population, which causes a third of the productive activities of the country are concentrated around the capital Katmandu. One of the key revenue consists remittances, working mostly as laborers in Persian Gulf countries, often in conditions which are not insured the most basic rights, for the rest of the Nepal depends on aid from foreign countries and tourism related to 'mountaineering, which now will suffer a major setback, even for the tragedy that occurred at the Everest base camp and for the destruction of access routes to the most visited sites. The tragedy of the earthquake has befallen a country already in precarious conditions, where they lack the means to relief and early recovery. Artistic heritage has been irreparably damaged. While the government has declared a state of national emergency, the situation is likely to deteriorate due to lack of hygiene, which could cause epidemics, to which is added the lack of drinking water. If the situation is more serious so far established in urban centers, where the collapses were numerous, are concerned about the situation of the many small towns blocks that are impossible to achieve because of the collapse of streets and roads; for this reason it is feared that the death toll is expected to rise compared to recent data, however, always updated. The international mobilization of aid provided quick answers, but the weather conditions, affected by heavy rains, coupled with the poor state of infrastructure, greatly complicates the action of the rescuers, which move in a natural environment totally hostile.
