The US ensure their commitment to the defense of South Korea and Japan
The
message of the new Secretary of Defense of the United States, James
Mattis, to Asian allies has been the desire to maintain the US
commitment in East Asia. The
Trump statements, both during the election campaign, and after the
election for president, portend a hallway in this region, which seemed
to be no longer considered central to American foreign policy. In
South Korea and Japan concern about the new attitude of what has always
been the most important ally of the two countries, had caused alarm in
their respective governments, in a time where in this world of salt area
the Chinese commitment to expand its
zone of influence and where there is the presence of the North Korean
dictator, Kim Jong-Un, who has repeatedly threatened its neighbors and
the United States itself to use nuclear weapons against them. The
Secretary Mattis, a retired general, who is visiting South Korea
suffered threatened North Korea with reprisals if they try to attack the
allied countries. This
statement represents the best insurance for Seoul and Tokyo governments
on continuing to cooperate fully with in the meantime, it seems to
restore the situational United States and, with this Obama. But
it can also represent a substantial step backwards Trump from his
intentions to employ fewer resources by military abroad, to force the
allies to a greater financial commitment. Actually
about it it did not seem feasible, because ran counter to the interests
of the American military, the defense industry and the same
geopolitical interests of the United States. The
confirmation of the support to Asian allies shows that American foreign
policy, at least in this area of the world, can not be varied in step
by the Obama administration to that of Trump, because there are not
enough valid ideological reasons to change American interests in the region and change the existing balance, especially when commercial interests are at play that affect this area of the planet. US
bases in South Korea, there are about twenty-eight thousand soldiers,
while in the Japanese Americans are actual forty-seven thousand. A
possible disengagement of the United States would force the two
countries to a reorganization of their defense systems, which could also
involve the creation of an atomic arsenal. To
American interests it is important to avoid a new nuclear
proliferation, even by allies, why would constitute a factor difficult
to manage, especially for the presence of China, which is investing
considerable sums for their own rearmament. If
there has to be some sort of balance of nuclear arsenals in the region,
it is better that this concern Washington and Beijing, without
involving other nations, because this would constitute a provocation to
China, which could trigger new and dangerous tensions. As
the situation in existence is confirmed by the statements of the
Secretary of Defense, it is not expected reactions from Beijing, which
sees kept the alliance scheme already present; not as it should be for North Korea, summoned directly by Mattis; Pyongyang
has been shown to not liking what he believes meddling and threats to
their nuclear weapons policy, so it will be possible that the North
Koreans are threatening war demonstration in the next few days. The
politically most important factor appears to be the Trump intentions,
at least at the international level, can not be implemented, because,
despite his statements, his purposes can not be untied, not only by
factors that are completely outside the control of the US government, but also the internal order, as the peculiar interests of the actual parties, also outside the institutions. This
does not mean that Trump in foreign policy should be underestimated,
but that for him there are limits, he probably had not considered .; this
is not an entirely positive factor because it highlights the amateurism
in the international arena of the new president, a poor practice that
can always lead to serious mistakes and dangerous consequences.
