At the start of negotiations between the Pakistani government and the Taliban
The first meeting between the Pakistani Taliban and the government of Nawaz Sharif should seek to put an end to seven years of armed insurgency by Islamist groups . But the deal is expected to be difficult and with little chance of success. The biggest obstacles are represented by the conditions imposed by the Taliban, among which the request to apply the sharia as the basic law of the country. This objective is central to the strategy of the Taliban since 2007 , the date of commencement of the campaign of attacks precisely for this purpose . Pakistan is a country of 180 million people , where the economic conditions of the population are disastrous and where the sovereignty of the government is assured only in the capital and in some other areas , which represent only a minority of the total territory , in addition, the United States , which is formally ally , is not a reliable partner due to the connivance of some of the senior military and intelligence services with Islamic terrorists . In this framework has matured the importance of fundamentalist groups , which combined with the tribal groups have stolen entire regions to the control of the state. For the new government to stop terrorist activity has become a priority , but the government does not have the means to finally defeat the Islamic groups and can not count on the U.S. , both for the difficulties encountered by the armed forces of Washington , and for not too alienating public opinion , which is not keen to see too close a relationship with the U.S.. This last point is a further condition laid down by the Taliban to enter into an agreement. What the Taliban government in Islamabad is to blame for being too submissive in the United States and its war on terrorism. The insurgents suffer from the presence of U.S. troops beyond the borders of Pakistan , Afghanistan , and also the use of drones on Pakistani territory . In fact, the United States , despite having reduced its military actions in Pakistani territory , including many actions agreed and unauthorized acted again recently in the tribal areas to target and eliminate Taliban leader Hakimullah Mehsud , considered a direct threat to the United States. The Taliban are asking the government of Pakistan , that these actions , as well as those against Al Qaeda ally , cease . The government in Islamabad is thus in a very unfavorable position because, while appealing to its sovereignty , of which , however, the Taliban regions there is no specific exercise , he already knows that the U.S. will continue to target if you identify potential threats directed at them . With this background it is hard to see a rapprochement of the positions of the two parties , the conditions imposed by the Taliban are too stringent and do not take into account the safe rejection of a third party , the United States , where the Pakistani government has no power of negotiation. Even where there might be a possibility of acts of the executive of Islamabad, on the question of the application of the sharia as the law of the country , the possibility that this request be realized seems very remote. The composition of the Pakistan sees a strong Muslim presence , about 97 % of the population , making it the second country in the world to spread Islam , but this, in turn, sees a division that corresponds to eighty percent of Sunnis and twenty percent of the Scythians , who are the second nation in the world for this concentration of power of Islam. In the remaining three per cent , there are Hindus and Christians. This composition of the society of the country makes it very difficult to apply Islamic law , although incidents of religious intolerance are on the rise and a good part of the population, even outside of the Taliban, would be in favor of this decision.
