Between China and Hong Kong, the differences are not only political, but also cultural
The profound differences that are being recorded in Hong Kong, not only are the consequences of non-exercise of political rights, which should be guaranteed under the agreement for the sale of the former British colony and summarized in the concept: a state of the two systems. Currently the two parts of the country share the capitalist system, but Hong Kong, whilst enjoying a range unthinkable in other parts of the People's Republic, the most important issues is already subject to a strict control of Beijing. In general, the rest of the country, the protests in Hong Kong are seen in a negative way, also because of the privileges enjoyed by the former colony and the protests are seen as an affront to China, rather than a search for the respect of international agreements and the maintenance of political rights. This result, due in large part to the press campaign of the organs of the regime and the control of possible sources of opposition, found no major allies on the mainland, as has happened overseas. China seems to have under control the internal situation, but must proceed with caution so as not to irritate foreign investors, who, shifting their interests to places considered more stable, may result in significant financial setbacks. Apart from the political point of view, the conflict is taking on importance in the social and geographic: the majority of the people of Hong Kong speak Cantonese, as opposed to spoken Mandarin in China and considers itself not so much Chinese Hong Kong but well 40% of the population. It is understandable, then, as the basis for the diatribe there are only political elements, but also cultural, due to a lack of integration of the former British colony in the social fabric of China. It must also be said that Beijing has sought to normalize these differences by focusing on the school system and education geared to an exaltation of the Chinese model, through the exaltation of nationalism, which also applies to the world of information, which was perceived almost as a attempt to cancel the peculiarities of Hong Kong in favor of the model of Chinese life and culture. It is, moreover, a mode repeatedly applied, although here in a lighter way, from the central government to eliminate cultural differences that individual areas of the country may have with Beijing and constitute an obstacle to thinking only of political leadership. In any case, the same Beijing has always tried to keep most Hong Kong can separate from the rest of the nation, with practical measures such as limiting the inputs of Chinese citizens, is to not allow contamination of ideas, both over-crowding over the former colony . Recent events have also put in evidence the presence of thugs against demonstrators, often identified as belonging to the Chinese mafia, who have not suffered, though not so late, deterrence of police forces. According to some analysts, the Chinese government would use the components of the triads in order to discourage the protest, using the fact that the Chinese mafia has all the convenience that the affairs of Hong Kong are not disturbed by events potentially harmful to the financial profits. This aspect has not yet been completely stressed due prominence by the media, but it could be a factor in not too favorable to the authorities in Beijing, in a context where the instability is believed to be a factor that can cause instability in a financial center of such a large importance.
