Resistors and meanings of the opening of the US in Cuba

The mixed reactions to the opening to the Cuban regime, by the US President Obama, you are far from subsided. While there is the support of the Summit of the Democratic Party, for what is considered a momentous decision, which opens to relaxing with a neighboring country and breaks over half a century of harsh contrasts, the reactions of the Republicans and the same Cuban exiles continue to be in opposition. The new attitude that Obama has expressed, is seen by opponents as a concession unmotivated to a regime that is still a dictatorship, despite the timid openings carried out by the brother of Fidel Castro. But also in Havana than to celebrate the reopening of the dialogue, the emphasis is pointed to by the local media on the release of prisoners and the opportunities that may open up for new relations with Washington. It is a signal that shows that even in the country there is distrust of the Cuban American neighbor and manifestations opening just expressed. Moreover in the television message that Raul Castro has sent to the nation where he announced the new relationship with the US is, perhaps, been underestimated by analysts look, unlike decisive: the Cuban head of state was presented before the cameras in his uniform commander of the armed forces, thus reaffirming the irreversibility of the decision and the total indisposition to any challenge to the new course. So in Cuba will not be allowed criticism about the change in relations with the United States. Not so in the country US: around this topic there is a huge bias present in American society, which is reflected on the actual possibility of eliminating, even in part the embargo against Cuba, because you need the approval of Congress, where Republicans are in the majority in both houses of parliament. In fact, one of the personalities who have expressed more critical was the Speaker of the House John Boehner, who still sees Cuba as an illiberal regime and patron of terrorist movements. This opinion is not isolated, there are different personalities, rather than eliminate the embargo, would rather increase it. Also in the Democratic Party are strong contrarian, true of all that of Robert Menendez, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, who expressed the opinion that the position of Obama defends the brutal behavior of the Cuban government. In fact the situation of civil rights in Cuba, although slightly improved, is still very far if only from the minimum standards, but it is also true that the level of the protests did not register when the US has signed agreements, for example, with China, which probably practice on its own people even more violations. One reason is the strong presence and the great importance of the Cuban exiles, who are an important part of some states in the US and also for the particularly troubled history of relations between Cuba and the United States, which have become almost a symbol as not to contaminate with openings considered dangerous. Obama did not, however, this initiative at random; the step was a lengthy gestation period and the fact that it can not be confirmed in his post, has set up a facility in making an action of which he was aware of the criticism that would bring. On closer inspection this opening is consistent with the intentions of the project, often not accomplished, the American President, who tried to practice a relaxation in international relations able to put the United States under a different lens, from the usual one with which Washington often identical with imperialism, though also well very attenuated. The opening in Cuba is to be read and placed in this groove, that Obama has failed to make a complete understanding especially in a country, still hostage of an idea of American supremacy. Whatever happens against the embargo, Obama this action represents a legacy for the next president and appears to be the beginning of an irreversible process that will also facilitate the landing of Cuban democracy in the country.
