The effects of Ebola on the economies of the affected countries
The catastrophic effects of the infection of Ebola are reflected alarmingly also on the economic aspects of the company and the affected countries. The estimate of one million people, which affects the number of those who are destined to go hungry, appears substantially true, if it refers to the three countries that were more victim of the contagion. The United Nations food agencies clearly speak of farming and seriously damaged supplies blocked due to fear of people being infected. Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea, the three most affected countries, with a number of deaths of about 6,900 people, had already, in normal situations, struggling with serious problems about finding food resources. Prevention systems and the consequent isolation of workers came to the interruption of roads, to prevent the spread of the infection, have had a strong negative effect on agricultural production systems, still based on the activity manual; this resulted in the loss of crops, which has significantly decreased access to food. Only in current month half a million people suffered the severe insecurity in access to food, but this number is expected to rise even more than one million by March 2015, if no alternatives will be studied to ensure at least minimum survival rations to population. We talk, therefore, to tight deadlines which require fast action by the United Nations and the countries that can ensure adequate food assistance, through aid and technology. On the other hand ensure proper nutrition is a way to fight the disease. However, what is required as the solution is not a humanitarian end in itself, but an aid able to sustain the productivity of the three countries, which has weakened both for the infection, that for fear of the disease. To import more food the three countries must continue to produce the raw materials that allow the export revenues, which are essential for the purchase of food; but with the block of economic activity in the production of coffee and cocoa, and the firm of mining, the economies of the three countries, already structurally weak, slowed down very significant that does not allow him access to imports. For this reason, organizations such as FAO, asked the industrialized countries and the richest coordinated action to allow the restart of these economies through monetary aid and technology. Another solution might be in the distribution of small amounts of money or vouchers that can allow access to the market for products that do start domestic consumption and thus stimulate economies now almost stationary. The basic problem remains to stop the advance of the disease, and also on this field are expected solutions and cutting-edge medicines capable of acting on a vast number of patients.
