Schulz will be the candidate of the Social Democrats against Merkel
The
congress of the German Social Democratic party elected with the votes
of 100% of the delegates, Martin Schulz as its president and, at the
same time, also as a candidate in the upcoming German elections of
September 24, as the main opponent of Angela Merkel. The
merit of Schulz is to have been able to revive the enthusiasm around
the center-left political party, too crushed in his action by the
tendency of the grand coalition government, which practiced policies
predominantly conservative. While
ensuring a valuable stability for the country, the government headed by
Merkel has certainly aroused a firm support from the base of the Social
Democratic Party, which, rather, had to adapt in a way forced to an
alliance with no alternative but, against nature same party. The
Schulz's approach to the German problem is certainly less conservative
and more disconnected from economic logic, which affected the mandates
of Chancellor Merkel; this
factor could prove decisive in the electoral mobilization also against
those who, while Social Democrat, abstained from the last electoral
contests because it did not share the logic of the grand coalition. With
Schulz field the center-left party has approached the Christian
Democrats quickly, coming to only one percentage point away from the
formation of Merkel, according to the latest polls. As announced some analysts, we are facing a real Schulz effect on German policy. However
the election is still relatively far away and it is said that the final
vote will not happen again the need for a new grand coalition to lead
the country; but
this time the presence of the former President of the European
Parliament should give a German change in attitude toward the European
Union, however, acknowledging those instances of greater social equity,
which have repeatedly been sacrificed in the name of financial
discipline. This
point has been the strength, but also the weakness of Merkel, who has
not been able to find alternatives that reconcile the financial strength
with the need for development of other countries, contributing
substantially to the expansion of populist and anti-European movements . The
proclamation of Schulz, as party president, elected so clearly, which
has never happened in Germany after World War II, demonstrates the will,
which also seems to be a necessity, that a substantial part of the
German people is proving to a change of direction of politics, both domestic, and European. Schulz's
candidacy should be read in this way: a politician convinced of the
need for a strong role in the world, but especially in the interior,
meaning that Brussels as a factor of development and the progressive
embankment inequalities that a functional interpretation finance and the economy intended as ends and not as means produced, creating the current disaffection with the union. Is
significant that this change of direction takes place in Germany, which
in fact is the lead nation of Europe, the country whose government has
so far imposed a restrictive view of the European Union, as ironclad
controller of budgetary constraints. This
policy was functional to German interests, which, for example, have
never agreed to invest their financial surplus, helping to create
imbalances in the budgets of other states; Schulz
for the element of solidarity between European countries has always
been crucial and decisive, and its application should may also be useful
to the German country, if it is able to invest in order to effectively
its financial surplus, in order to break down their internal social
problems, due to a labor market blocked. From
the European point of view to invest in other EU countries and outside
will give Germany the political authority which has been lacking because
too tied to the financial aspect, only one side of the many facets that
need to dial the prestige of an ambitious country. Schulz
certainly can not solve alone, if it comes at the helm of the German
country, all European problems, but it certainly will be able to give
the necessary impetus to improve the overall situation.
