Yet the shadow of chemical weapons on the Syrian conflict
While the fate of the Syrian conflict remain in the balance, thanks to the strengthening of the rebels' military base located in the area of Aleppo, which led to a rebalancing of forces, the Syrian opposition denounces the use of chemical weapons by the regular troops loyal to President Bashar al-Assad. In particular, the banned weapons were used during the recent attack on the eastern districts of Damascus, Free Syrian Army controlled, which resulted in a death toll between 200 and 400 (the highest value has been spread by rebel organizations ), where they were struck not only the fighters, a number of civilians, including children and the elderly. According to some doctors belonging to the local committees related to dissidents, were found classic symptoms of poisoning by nerve gas, probably caused by the wet chemical sarin.
Through the local television station, the government has denied this version.
The health situation is likely to worsen as would be present at the scene of the fighting several seriously injured, unable to be transferred to more complex structures of medical intervention and appropriate to intervene in the cases detected. The operation of the regular part of the plans that aim to take full control of the capital, the rebels subtracting the districts under their control.
The alleged chemical attack, if confirmed, coincides with the presence of UN envoys that should ascertain the use of chemical weapons in the Syrian conflict. If the complaint should not be denied the rebels could mean that the Assad regime would be in serious trouble and this would have had the need to resort to non-conventional weapons to try to straighten the tide of the war. It should be noted that the warring parties have respectively accused of using chemical weapons and this controversial aspect of the conflict has not yet been clarified. Syria is one of seven countries in the world that has not signed the Protocol of 1997, which prohibits the use of these weapons and it is known that Syrian territory are several deposits of chemical weapons, some of which, presumably, could be also in the hands of rebel forces. This situation, at the height of a war which has become desperate, could induce both parties to use non-conventional weapons to hasten the end of the conflict, but cause untold suffering in both the personnel involved in the fighting, both in the still large number of civilians in the theater of war . The action of the UN inspection has been authorized only in three war scenarios and is limited by the result that it may acquire, which can only be to establish whether the chemical gas have been used or not, without being able to indicate a fault.
