Libya grappling with armed militias

In a Libya still very far from the stabilization , it accentuates the problem of the presence of the militias. It is a major obstacle to the peace process in the country because these paramilitary groups still hold many weapons and can affect the life of the main cities . Armed militias , which were formed during the war against dictator Gaddafi , are generally not an expression of parts of the population , as representatives of special interests , ranging from cheap to religious ones . Initially, in the first phase that followed the liberation of the country from dictatorship , the militias had a control function , which replaced it as the police and the army, which had to be rebuilt completely . For these services, the militia was paid a salary , which is now the Tripoli government no longer wants to pay. In addition, the population seems to be more willing to tolerate the oppression that these armed groups and carry out several popular demonstrations against the militias , they crossed the streets of major Libyan cities . But without adequate force able to deal with the militias , the government has no other path than that of mediation, which, however , appears difficult to pursue . Parts of the militias see themselves as the saviors of the country and reject a simple dismantling , without adequate compensation , while others represent and defend groups and factions , that without the support armed , they could see drastically reduced their privileges. All this happens in a situation of almost total lawlessness , which favors the armed clashes , which are characterizing the country from June . This state of affairs stems from the inability of the political class to give the country a structure and even the impossibility , which has led to Libya to proceed alone on state building . One born after the end of Gaddafi is a very divided country , with all the social and political structures practically nil, whose long dictatorship has left without a ruling class capable of leading the country out of the institutional chaos . In this perspective, many hopes are pinned on the possible role of Italy, not alone but accompanied by other partners, to provide material assistance and organizational support to Libya, on the basis of the ties that have developed between the two countries and with the wretched colonial domination with collaborations that are occurring thereafter. Fears concrete which should lead to the solution are based on the possibility that the degeneration of the situation will turn into a new civil war , which could be developed on a regional basis , thanks to the deep rivalry between the various clans, who , it should be remembered , are the ' unique social structure survived even during the dictatorship of Gaddafi. In addition, as for the other Arab countries on the southern shores of the Mediterranean, there is always the religious variable , which could develop conflicts between the non-denominational and Islamists . As you can see if the problem of militias is a fact and an emergency ever more present, and possible connections with other more serious developments continue to hold greater apprehension international audience and especially the Western countries because of the importance of Libya as manufacturer and distributor of oil.
