Assad could be indicted for war crimes and crimes against humanity
According to the UN , through the High Commissioner for Human Rights , Navi Pillay , exist tangible evidence to indict Bashar Al Assad of war crimes and crimes against humanity committed in Syria. The committee of inquiry seems to have produced a great deal of evidence to support the charge , recovered the beginning of the survey , which dates back to August 2011. The perpetrators not only concern the Syrian president, but would be extended to the highest offices of government in Damascus . While not the first time that the executive is involved in the Syrian these charges , the major novelty is represented by the prosecution explicitly aimed at Assad fact never happened before in a formal way . The survey was conducted by four researchers led by Brazilian Paulo Sergio Pinheiro and included the Swiss Carla Del Ponte, former prosecutor international expert in war crimes. The Commission has never had access to the country and Syria had completed the investigation thanks to the testimonies of some 2,000 people involved in criminal acts in Syria and surrounding countries , with telephone interviews or through electronic means . The investigation , despite being almost in conclusion , it is not yet complete and this does not allow to make public the list of alleged suspects, which includes personality of the factions opposed to the Syrian government , including in the field of the rebels were identified those responsible for particularly cruel actions and in flagrant violation of human rights , which is , however, already established by the cruelty carried out by Sunni Islamist militias . It remains to be seen what the effects of this indictment , both on the continuation of the war, both on the negotiations should start soon and to which he was to attend Assad himself . If any evidence were to emerge really proven against Assad , could again create the conditions for an attack against the Syrian regime , particularly advocated by Saudi Arabia and the Gulf monarchies , which would present a possibility to do weigh considerably to increase the pressure against Damascus. It will be necessary to see the attitude to be taken by the U.S. and Russia , with the first to be asked to move a military attack and the second that exploit the indictments also on the rebels to stop any action against Assad. This fact , in short , is likely to jeopardize the faint hopes that were springing up around the creation of a table for the negotiations , however, if the evidence will be irrefutable indictment of those responsible for war crimes and crimes against humanity is an act mandatory and due, that, after all , is only the formalization of a phenomenon well known but unfortunately not dealt with due regard , in particular by the United Nations , held hostage by the absurd behavior of the Security Council , a body drained of its tasks and subservient to the needs of the permanent members .
