The difficult start of negotiations for Syria

The start of negotiations in Geneva on the Syrian issue , it is now very difficult. The delegations met separately until now the UN special envoy , Lakhdar Brahimi , to try to set the mode of the encounter between the two sides, which would be the first since the conflict began . The difference between the National Coalition , an alliance of forces representing the political opposition abroad , and representatives of the Assad regime , appears enormous , if not insurmountable . The two delegations remain on their respective positions without giving anything these assumptions and with the work of the UN seems really a daunting task . The activity of both parties in Geneva, for the moment, was to listen to the speeches of representatives of the 39 nations invited to the meeting and to reaffirm their own version on the causes and on the conduct of war. The same Lakhdar Brahimi , has admitted to not knowing how the story will evolve , the initial idea of the UN was to listen to the versions of the two parties in the same room , but the climate has advised the envoy to opt for this solution is to wait until the point of view of the National Coalition , whose representatives have repeatedly expressed a total veto to a transitional government with Assad accused , even by recent photographic evidence of brutality and torture of prisoners. The charges of crimes against humanity explicitly charged to the dictator of Damascus , together with the conditions of hunger faced by the Syrian people , because of missing permissions for the creation of humanitarian corridors , causes more severe impediments to the National Coalition to credited Assad , as a possible interlocutor . Another thorny issue is represented by the fate of their dictator , in the case of his defeat . While Russia and Iran, arguing for exile National Coalition calls for an international process , like those celebrated the Serbian war criminals . This problem , which for now is secondary, in the case of opening of negotiations , will be one of the most difficult cases . The representatives of Assad , who consider themselves the legitimate government of the country, continue to insist on the fight against terrorism , trying to unite all the opposition in a one-sided , putting , that is, with both the political opposition National Coalition , with the Sunni extremists , backed by the Gulf countries, which have links with Al Qaeda. On this scarecrow tries to pry Damascus to release the pressure from the West . The fact remains that the first result to be achieved , the more urgent for the UN is to find an agreement on the creation of humanitarian corridors that would enable the population to supply food and medicines and even medical personnel can handle the emergency . If the United Nations will miss this minimum target will only lose more credibility with the public world .
