The importance of Jordan to the United States

One of the major effects of the Syrian war was the great movement of population to other countries to escape from the conflict. After Lebanon and Turkey , the third destination of the Syrian citizens was Jordan , which has , however , increased poverty. The massive emigration forced the Jordanian government to manage the phenomenon with the establishment of refugee camps can provide food, medical care and education , but without giving the Syrian citizens the right to work . This decision has been taken to protect the population of the country, which is struggling with a severe economic activity, which has forced the decision to cut subsidies for food and gasoline. Jordan has a gross domestic product of € 3,600 and an indictment of eleven percent unemployment . Despite the ban imposed on the work of Syrian refugees , has developed a black market in labor that generated a fall in wages and a general rise in prices, which led to demonstrations against the government in Amman. This situation of social instability has generated a great concern in the U.S., for which Jordan is an ally of increasing importance . The geographical position of the country is in fact crucial to the defense of Israel , and even when the quota is essential for the acceptance of Syrian refugees . This has further developed the plan of aid which the United States are the protagonists to Jordan . It is a five-year plan approved by the U.S. Congress that provides for the allocation of approximately $ 660 million for economic and military aid . Already last year, 900 U.S. soldiers were sent , the installation of a battery of Patriot missiles and some F-16 fighters , in order to prevent the country intrusion of the conflict in Syria. This measure should and must be a protection for the Israeli state , especially from the preventive point of view . The American president received the Jordanian King Abdullah II , guaranteeing the continuity of aid and even insurance to take charge of any debts that Jordan will not be able to repay . Besides the importance of acting as a buffer state between Syria and Israel , the country of Jordan acquires greater weight in the context of Arab alliances in the U.S., as a result of the cooling of relations with the Gulf states , which have adopted a policy in support of the groups fundamentalist opponents of Assad is not shared by Washington. For the Americans, it is important that the country is not crossed by the winds of revolt , both in favor of democracy, which in a religious sense , not to undermine the power of the Hashemite dynasty in charge. The stability of Jordan has taken a very significant importance to the United States , which explains the massive program of aid granted in Amman.
